Tōkyō 東京

The capital of Japan since the Meiji Period (1868-1912), Tōkyō is home to nearly 10 mio. inhabitants. Greater Tōkyō, including parts of Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures, is a megalopolis home to more than 37 Mio. people.

Most fascinating to me is how Tōkyō retained, up the present day, an accumulation of villages, cities. Even within the 23 districts of Tōkyō Prefecture, as soon as one descends into the old lower city (shitamachi, 下町), Tōkyō feels like a never-ending mid-size city with an almost local touch.

Before I moved to Kyōto in 2015, I all-in-all spent well over a year in Tōkyō, living with families and getting to know certain corners of the city as if they were my second home. Due to this nature of my stay in Tōkyō, most of my pictures from there are snapshots. So in a way, please don't expect any masterpieces on this page... :)
