The Salzkammergut refers to a historically imprtant salt-producing region in what is today Upper Austria, Styria and Salzburg.

Although not an independent political entity, the special status enjoyed under Habsburg rule as directly-governed region, salt-producing had a lingering effect on a region full with dozens of lakes.
